Pinnace MKII No 40
Groves and Gutteridge 60ft General Service Pinnace Mk II No 40
Built by Steve and Nick Brown
Built in the 1930s as part of the modernisation of the RAF Marine Craft Section, this class of work boat replaced the early 56ft Pinnaces which were based upon Royal Navy boats.
They were 60ft long, had a beam of 14ft, and displaced 24.5tons. Built mainly from mahogany theses vessels served in almost every theatre of operations becoming the workhorse of the RAF MCS. Their main duties included range safety, weapons recovery, and maintenance support, however during WW2 some were converted in Air Sea Rescue Pinnaces to assist the High Speed Launches at the height of the Battle of Britain.
RAF No 40 entered service in April 1940 serving with the RAF until 1944 when she was transferred to Royal Navy control until her disposal.
This model is built to 1/12th scale and is powered by two 12v Honda car heater motors driving three propeller shafts via a drive belt. Apart from some minor fittings the entire model is scratch-built using plywood and softwood. The model is incredibly sea worthy and can survive near enough any weather condition at the lake, it has even served as an ice breaker during the winter months!
