Steering course Saturday 26th October 2013.
Having enjoyed a bright autumnal Friday before the event would the weather hold for the Saturday? Well yes and no, it was a little on the cold side with light gusty winds providing quite a chop at times and the sun was a rare visitor but the steering course and the Keith Cary Shield event went ahead as planned and the vast majority of us where at the lakeside for five and a half hours.
The steering course was very much as nature had left it with a few buoys in the wrong place and as the water looked very uninviting they stayed there and we worked and sailed around them!
The design of the course and position in the lake means that those not actually on the course could pretty much sail as they wanted as on a normal club day and get ready for the Keith Cary Shield.
As it turned out the course was manageable even with the quite heavy chop at times, but as far as I could see there were no retirements and no sinkings. There were some thirteen competitors taking part and because of the weather conditions and members enjoying themselves it was decided to cut the event down to one round, with a little less wind and a lot less talking and merriment we might have squeezed in another one but as we had the Keith Cary Shield to run it we quit while we were ahead.
The organizers decided that as the event had been cut short from the normal number of rounds then there would be medals for the first five shortest times ( and very close they were), the winners were as follows,
1st Les Griggs U.S.Coast Guard Cutter 2:00min
2nd Mick Shambrook Shirley Ann 2:34min
3rd Paul Millers Hellen 2:44min
4th Clive Beard White Star 2:45min
5th Ieuan Brinkworth Fishing boat 2:52min
Congratulations to all that took part and we all look forward to next year when we would hope to put a few more events.
The Keith Cary Shield.
The criteria for this award are basically scale appearance on the water and attention to detail and craftsmanship in build and presentation. As I have previously mentioned members had a chance to see the boats on the water at the same time as the steering course and again afterwards but the chop that was by this time getting worse and the skies were getting dark we hurried to the static judging which actually took quite a while.
The paperwork has been duly collected and collated the results are known only by the Chairman and the organizer and Treasure Nick Brown and the winner and two runners up will be announced at the Christmas dinner and the awards presented at same.
It just remains for a vote of thanks to the organisers and all those who turned up and took part, entering into the spirit of competition whilst seeing the funny side if a few mistakes and collisions with the decking when caught out by the wind, thanks to Maureen for the cakes, three in total and precious little left for me when we got home( no wonder I’m loosing weight)!
All in all a brilliant day and already looking forward to next year.

Deans Marine Open Day 13th-15th September 2013.
Once again several of us found our way to Farcett for Ron Deans factory open day and a chance to meet the many friends that we have made over the years that we have been attending and also to make new ones and add to our list of useful contacts and suppliers.
Steve, Nick, myself, Nigel and Bob Maggs ventured out in light drizzle on the Saturday morning with the prospect of better weather later in the day and that’s just what we got, a little on the chilly side at times and generally fine, but with the company we were in the weather didn’t really matter.
Ron and Shelia Kingdon were also there and had their own display of 5 ships.
We were very fortunate to share a tent with Mark from the Burton MBC who gave us a first hand insight into 3D printing and the progress he has made in applying the technology to our hobby.
Steve took his X1 project along and a popular choice of subject it was as he never seemed to stop talking and missed several cups of free coffee. I’m hoping he’ll bring it along to the “bring you boat night” at the Beeswing.

Much to Nick’s delight David Viewing bought some of his Victorian fleet along and set up next to us and we saw very little of Nick after that as David spent quite a long time on the lake and Nick was following in Steve footsteps and doing an awful lot of talking to the many fans of the Victorian era in naval history who attended the show.
The whole day was thoroughly enjoyable and the good weather held out till just after we packed up so thanks to all who represented the club on the stand and to those that turned up to support both the club and the hobby.
The was much more going on than I could get around to see and get involved with so I have asked Derrick to put a link to the Mayhem forum here where there is further comment and more picture.
