Mayhem at Wicksteed 20162016 marked the tenth anniversary of the gathering of the members of the online forum group- Model Boat Mayhem- in one place at Wicksteed Park.
The weather over the two days was not the usual bank holiday weekend of vertical Northamptonshire mist or Wickie's wind but glorious sun and gentle breezes. In other words- perfect sailing weather! |
This year we had nine clubs exhibiting their models, and some truly amazing ones they were too. Everything from Jutland Battleships to Bathing Ladies in their baths listening to their favourite tunes! Three traders made their way to the lake side, many thanks to Ron Dean of Dean's Marine for supporting us for the tenth time, and welcome to Carl & Flo of Linkspan Models displaying their new ferry kits, and to 'Big Fat Mike' selling his excellent quality fittings.
The gathering of Victorian, Edwardian, and WW1 era warships made a welcome return this year with Geoff Dixon's stunning HMS Iron Duke, and his mate Andy, who displayed an equally beautiful HMS Renown of the early 1890s. Tony H and Co bought along their latest project of SMS Nassau and two escorting B-100 class Torpedo Boat Destroyers (TBDs) made from foam blocks proving that you can build anything from anything! Ron and Sheila Kingdon showed their latest build for Mr Dean, a variation on Dreadnought- HMS Bellerophon and HMS Hannibal. Whilst fellow club member Tony Newstead showed his fleet of late 19th century Japanese and British protected cruisers and TBDs. The most wonderful inclusion was Bob Kilfrary's working model of HMS Polyphemus and his lovely french torpedo boat Descartes, and early destroyer HMS Amazon. I managed to add my HMS Dreadnought (some-what unfinished) and SMS Emden.
Once again some brilliant working large yachts graced the lake, everything from Marbleheads to J-Class Racers, at one point on the Sunday afternoon there was five or six large yachts sailing together bringing back nostalgia of the 1920's and 1930's at the heyday of the racing yacht in the park. John Dowd of Runcorn MBC showed everyone how a 6ft long J-class can out manoeuvre anything on the water whilst Pete Carmen (aka Klunk) never stopped sailing his lovely Robbe Atlantis whilst wearing his customary outfit matching his nick-name!
Some exhibitors also displayed some older types of model in the vintage category, Roger Clements displayed on the Peterborough & Area Model Boat Club his vintage collection and a model of his own design which represents the vintage style he loves so much. Dave Milborn showed his new 'old' models of the Huntsman and Huntress that we all loved so much in the 1960's.
Many thanks has to go Martin 'Mayhem' Davies and his family (Ruth and Gina) for presenting the show, and for all the tea, coffee, biscuits and bacon rolls you could ever ask for, Phil Abbot (aka Steamboat Phil) and Steph for coming all the way from France bringing the vital tea urn and speaker system, the Scottish Lads from Glasgow & Richmond MBC for providing the late night fun in the camp site, and finally thanks to Wicksteed Park for supporting the show and all the clubs.
