HMS Canada
Built By Mick Huggett of Anglia Marine Model Club and owned by Derrick Williams.
This is a slightly unusual model, as there are (to my knowledge) no kits or plans available for this ship. Originally built for the Chilean navy pre-WWI, she was purchased by the Royal Navy before she was completed, at the outbreak of WWI. She saw action at the Battle of Jutland, and managed to survive taking no hits or casualties during the battle. After the end of the war she was resold to Chile, and survived the WWII, eventually being broken for scrap in Japan in 1959.
This model is approximately 4 foot long making it roughly 1/160 scale, and is of plank on frame construction. It's ben built using a mix of balsa and plywood, making it light weight for the size. The running gear consists of twin 4 blade brass propellers, driven by 2 'Torpedo 500' motors, giving it a good turn of speed if needed, but also allowing a long run time from the 3ah 12V lead acid battery. These photos were taken on a nice calm day at the lake, but I have sailed her in windy conditions and she handled the rough water nicely, cutting through the waves like a proper ship, whilst remaining (relatively) stable.
There's a couple of things that need fixing on her, as seen in some of the photos the top of the mast has been broken at some point and needs painting to match the rest of the grey paintwork. I've also recently bought a Graupner Super Smoker to fit, but will need to hollow out the funnels to fit this. Also I need to seal where the superstructure fits on at the bow, as at full speed going through someone elses wake the water runs up over the bow, back over the foredeck and into the hull. The amount of water that gets in is minimal though, and is away from all the electrics so shouldn't cause any problem anyway.
If you'd like any more photos of a specific part, just contact me using the form on the contact us page and I'll be happy to help.
